Note

Upgrades in the Linux universe are almost like rain drops during a storm. It is possible to find another upgrade every day and even new applications and technologies born every week. During the past weeks I got myself trapped behind the attempt to upgrade all the system and retain using the latest Linuxlive version which is not as young as we need. After several attempts I finally got it to work by upgrading almost everything besides the scripts. Now I have an upgraded Linuxlive and I will include Plymouth support during this week.

Open source alive and thriving

"New York University anthropologist Gabriella Coleman says the open-source software movement has emerged relatively unscathed from the economic downturn. Ms Coleman was the opening keynote speaker at Linux.Conf.Au, a trans-Tasman conference held in Wellington last week that attracted more than 600 open-source software developers and enthusiasts."

Disk-O-Tech: Linux Disk Management

"You might have worked with Linux for years and never added an additional disk to your system or perhaps you were too frustrated by Linux’s strange ways of dealing with disks to attempt it. In either case, here’s your opportunity to work through the steps required in adding a new disk to your system. The process, once you have your disk physically installed into the system, is simple."

The real value of FOSS to business – A personal example

"I am going to tell a story just to give an understanding of the real value of FOSS in business. I recently developed an SMS (Short Message Service) daemon for a project at work. The daemon is using the SMPP protocol to send messages. To save time (and money) I used an Open Source SMPP library (from Logica) instead of implementing the protocol myself."

Packages and Kernel

The development continues. After several problems to build the base livecd system I have already to restart the work because I have decided to not continue with Bootsplash and use Plymouth, now I have to rewrite some Linuxlive lines to add Plymouth to the initrd.gz. Besides Plymouth I will also upgrade to the last Kernel version and finally finish the first step to build the base system. During the next days I will dedicate the time to include Plymouth, recompile the Kernel and start to test again the new iso.

Plymouth

Plymouth is already in use here. I have compiled and installed Plymouth to test and I also prepared our theme, a small modification of one of the main Plymouth themes. Plymouth will probably replace bootsplash in the next releases.
