The Malware
Problem (and a solution)
"Some
of you might have heard about the Malware incident that recently has
hit our friends from gnome-look.org. While some of you might chuckle
about it because it hit the competition, there really is nothing to
chuckle about, because the next target could easily be us. In fact
someone might be uploading a Malware component at this very moment.
Noone could tell until it's too late."

Does Open
Source Software Put Government Security at Risk?
"The Obama
Administration vows to cut costs in part by using open source software
(Software whose source code is made available to the user), cloud
computing, virtualization, Linux and other low cost technologies. But,
does the use of open source software put the government, its records
and our national security at risk? The argument goes like this: "If the
government uses open source software, then the government is at risk
because the security flaws are exposed publicly." The argument
continues with, "The use of proprietary software protects the
government from security attacks because its code is hidden and not
released to the public." There is, however, a significant flaw in the
argument against open source software's use in government."

Netbooks and
where the future takes them
"Netbooks seem to
be a growing trend in today's market. They're a low budget computer
that allow you to do basic stuff like surfing the web, writing
documents and a little more. However, are they really useful for those
whose computer needs are more than surfing the web?"

KDE 4.4 Beta:
Incremental Doesn't Mean Directionless
"Incremental
releases for large projects are often grab bags of unrelated features.
However, KDE SC 4.4 beta 1 (aka KDE 4.3.80) is a welcome exception to
the rule.
True, the release includes new applications and improvements to
existing applications on the KDE desktop. But it also features
improvements to general desktop functionality and the evolution of
several technologies and directions introduced earlier in the KDE 4
series of releases. In other words, it is ambitious, with far more
innovations than than the average incremental release. "

Packages
and New Possibilities
The development
continues around building packages for the next project. During last
week I continue the compilation of Moblin related projects and their
dependencies. After almost build entirely the GNOME and several
additions to XFCE, Moblin is the next project I will introduce to you.
As I said before, I intend to give everyone the possibility to choose
between GNOME, KDE and Xfce with for both projects a special Netbook
interface.
Moblin related
projects are much more difficult to build because I could not find any
Slackware build scripts to use. I am using lines from Fedora and/or
OepnSUSE build scripts to help prepare our own scripts and also some
patches from OpenSUSE with visities to Launchpad and Debian repository.
Our build scripts will help people in the future to prepare Slackware
packages.
