GoblinX Newsletter Ed.225 11/08/2009

Note

After a few days out of service because of a small trip, I went back to the task of building packages. This is not an ordinary task because I search the internet for possible bugs and patches, new dependencies, build scripts to adjust and more before actually compile the application or library, sometimes I find some useful tips inside the configure command and try enable more resources forgotten by the example build script.

GoblinX – An Alternative OS With 4 Different Flavors

"In today’s Ubuntu dominated Linux landscape, it’s refreshing to stumble upon an alternative linux software distribution choosing to follow its own path.  GoblinX is one of these.  After five years of development, they are still basing their distribution on Slackware and trying to ease the use of keeping it simple without assuming they know everything every user might want."

Could Microsoft switch to Linux?

"You'd expect, as my friend Preston Gralla did, that when someone says "proprietary software is eventually going to be doomed," and that Microsoft's future might best be served in releasing its own version of Linux, that he'd be a Linux fan. Wrong: this prophet of Windows doom and gloom was Keith Curtis, a former Microsoft Research staffer. Could he be right? I think the answer is yes and no."

"Back in July of 2008 we learned of GNOME 3.0 as plans were laid out during the GUADEC '08 conference to make the GNOME 2.30 release their "3.0" version. A art and user-interface followed months later and then this April the GNOME 3.0 road-map was laid out that put this release, which will overhaul the GNOME desktop in comparison to the usual incremental releases, to come in March of 2010."
