GoblinX Newsletter, Issue 217 (09/13/2009)

Editor’s Note

The last development of GoblinX is probable starting today because after the G:Standard release we will close this beloved and almost famous project and start a new one as I already let you know. Most of the ideas behind GoblinX will continue be used in our brand new project and other suggestions. The next project will bring some unique and innovative works inside the development process and distribution method. I have a date in mind for the first release of the new project, december eight, but I will wait GNOME 2.28 and KDE 4.3 inside Slackware.

Third Plasma Summit Lifts KDE Desktop To Higher Grounds

“Last week, the third Plasma developers meeting was held in the Swiss Alps. 15 developers from 3 continents came to Randa, Canton Wallis to work on Plasma’s code, design new ideas and concepts and to strengthen their bonds as a sub-community within KDE. Topics of this third Plasma sprint, which is named after a plasma fusion reactor, included but were not limited to Plasma on mobile devices, network-enabled Plasma widgets and a richer user interface thanks to a new animation framework. Furthermore deeper integration of web services in the Plasma shell, semantic awareness of Plasma components, secure privilege elevation and polishing of the existing functionality, among many other things, were on the agenda.”

Do thes Linux “CAD” applications stand up to the standards?

“Often, when I ask why users don’t adopt Linux, I am met with the response “There are no CAD (Computer Aided Design) applications. Now I will confess that I know next to nothing about CAD, so I thought I would take a moment to highlight some of the CAD applications available for the Linux operating system, show how they are installed and started, highlight their features, and then let those that know CAD well report on how successful (or not) they are. Sort of a user-generated showdown if you will.”

Go-oo – OpenOffice with a twist

“OpenOffice is a wonderful, useful, free office suite for Windows, Linux and Mac users worldwide. It is rich in features, quite secure, extensible, and can even run from external storage devices, offering you portability and flexibility. It is definitely a viable alternative to Microsoft Office, if you don’t mind doing things a little differently from what you’re used to.”
